This unit is enjoyable if you like chemistry and biology. However, I think that CHEM1002 must absolutely be a prerequisite for this unit. The first month or so is essentially most of the content from 1002 crammed into those few weeks. I was fortunate enough to have taken 1002 the previous semester, but the students that did not really struggled and I found that to be very unfair. The labs are really easy to get full marks and almost full marks in the post-lab assessments online. The quizzes were quite challenging and particularly sucked about them was that we were not given any kind of practise quiz as was the case in CHEM1002, it makes sense because this unit has an emphasis on biochemistry which requires more memorisation as opposed to actual problem solving.

This unit was very challenging with a lot of content having to memorise. The unit begins with organic chemistry which was my least favourite topic with the lecturer continuously rambling on about how this part is similar to CHEM1002. If you did CHEM1002 this portion of the unit would be familiar but for those who didn't like me, this portion of the unit was an absolute nightmare with a high amount of content that you needed to know and a lot of the chemical concepts being quite hard. Things improved however with the next section: nucleic acids which is a revision of DNA and RNA. If you are simultaneously doing SCIE1106, a lot of the concepts overlap. This overlap was continued in amino acids. Although the lecturer for this portion had very long lectures which I found challenging and boring, a lot is still similar to SCIE1106. Despite this, you are to memorise all the structures and characteristics of the amino acids which I found very stupid and hard. The proteins, sugars and fatty acids lecturers were a lot better with the content being a lot more relaxed and interesting. Despite this, for the sugars and fatty acids components, a lot of reaction pathways were to be memorised which I also found stupid and hard. The labs were quite enjoyable and easy to score 95%+ in. The quizzes are easy to get 100% in except for the organic chemistry and amino acids quizzes which are the topics that was the least enjoyable for everyone. The difficulty of the exam was quite average. Overall, I found a lot of the content very unnecessary, making the unit a lot more difficult than it should be but the unit was still quite well-run.

Really easy if you’ve done CHEM1002 before, but still quite doable without. The lectures on organic chemistry ran through everything really fast, and some of the lecturers poured too much into their slides making it unclear as to what was actually useful. The labs are really interesting and most of the time we finished early. The exam was worth 50% and was quite easy if you did and understood the practise exam(which the solutions were’t given for). The 5 topic quizzes were reasonable and straight forward, but the topic 2 quiz was extremely specific and I found it really hard using only the lecture notes we were given. The labs were easy marks, if you went and filled out everything. If you like chemistry and biology then a good unit to do.

i really hated this unit even though I love biochemistry and it's my major. The protein lecturer and the fats lecturer were horribly boring and made me hate this unit so much. but on the other hand it's an interesting unit and it's not hard to hd, as the topic tests are very helpful and the exam was very easy.

Didn't like the unit that much, the lecturers were average (only like 2 good ones) and some made the content very complicated - it's a good unit to take to widen your chemistry knowledge

I enjoyed this unit. The first topic (of 6) was really slow which can be discouraging but the following topics are really interesting and the lecturers are great. Liz Quail, one of the unit coordinators, is a fantastic person and is very welcoming to talk to. The labs are not the best but are easy marks and the lecture quizzes keep you on track. The exam is weighted evenly so if you don't get a topic you still have 5 others to get that high mark. Overall it is a nice units.

I hated this unit with a burning passion but trudged through due to it being a core unit. The unit was slightly disorganised, the new text book had missing chunks of information and was also inconsistent with the lectures.

Overall good unit. The lectures provide you with all the information you need for the online tests and the exam. The labs are pretty easy. Some of the concepts are tricky to grasp but most of the content is understandable.

Great unit, very well-managed and the unit coordinator is easy to talk to. Content heavy in a few parts but very breezy in others.
