20% tutorial participation, 30% in class scene analysis (30mins long), and 50% take home final essay (1500 words). They give you two tries for the in class scene analysis and take your highest mark. I did poor on the first one, but well in the second one - make sure to state the specific message from the scene and back it up with film techniques that they teach you. You have to say your ideas to the class during tuts to get participation marks. The final essay was quite open, we had to write comparing 2 series chosen from the range of series watched during semester. Make sure to watch the assigned episodes before each tut coz they mark you on evidence that you’ve watched the series. One lecture every week, I didn’t watch them I just read the slides. I got a HD, but not sure if it was “easy,” since the marking is quite subjective. Low time commitment and fun (just watching and talking about TV series).

Wasn’t that enjoyable. Tutorial was long and exhausting. The tutor expected you to share your thoughts with not only your table group but in front of the whole class too so even if you attend all classes and only share your thoughts within the table, they won’t give you high participation marks (worth 20%). Also depends on the tutor you get - I got an emo tutor who dressed in all black and gave out harsh marks. Most movies and series picked were boring, so it became a drag to even watch them. They hardly gave any resources on how to write the essays except for an outdated example. So don’t pick this if you’re not the best at writing because they do mark harsh. Did this as an elective but hated it because of the tutor.

Highly recommend this unit if you enjoy watching shows on streaming platforms, some interesting topics were explored about the rise of television streaming. My tutor Shalmalee was super helpful, and from what I gathered, the other staff were supportive for other classes too! My tip for this unit is to ensure that your essay structure is good and use all the resources made available to you. All in all a fun unit and HD'able! Not much time commitment required either!

This unit has been renamed Netflicks: Cinema and Long-form Television. I really enjoyed this unit. It was fun, relevant and engaging. The lectures and tutorials were super interesting and well run, and although not always directly relevant to the assessment tasks, I felt the links were not that hard to draw. Strongly recommend - for a second-year broadening unit this is as good as it gets in terms of easy (and fun) HD!

Absolute waste of time. This unit may seem fun with weekly film watching tasks, but the lectures and tutorials were completely irrelevant to writing the graded essays. Assessment format is also ludicrous; 40% each for 2 essays and 20% for participation??
