Biomedicine & Genetics, MMI || Anki, Exam Prep and Assignments Hello! I am a first year medic...

Reviews

The actual content of the unit turned out better than I had expected. However, it's essential you keep on top of it as it's so easy to fall behind and often heaps of practice questions need to be done to ensure you retain each topic well. I think you do have to have a genuine passion and interest in genetics to really enjoy and do well in this unit. Assessments include lab participation, pre-lab and post-lab quizzes, two tests, a presentation and exam. The presentation is just answering one of the laboratory booklet questions so nothing that takes up too much time. The exam was quite good. Questions very similar to the practice questions and past exam qs popped up so no awful surprises. For the linkage and mapping topic Mark had given us a great variety of practice questions. I do wish we had more for quantitative genetics and population genetics (as these questions are largely calculator based) but, having said that, the exam questions did not stretch far from the few practice questions we were given. Overall, a solid unit with a solid structure. An HD is possible but it can be a bit time-consuming when you aren't really fascinated by genetics and have heavy core units from other disciplines so I wouldn't recommend it as a broadening unit unless you really, really love genetics.

Biggest chef kiss for this unit. The transition to online teaching was seamless. I believe it was the unit co-coordinator Monika's first time managing a unit and I have to say she did an impeccable job. The lectures are super fun to watch, the labs are crazy interesting (especially the last one about population genetics where we assessed traits in ourselves), and the content is riveting. I absolutely adored the LOTR references in the final exam! Hats off to Monika and the other lecturers!! The demonstrators were super helpful and nice too!

I really enjoyed this unit. All the lecturers were very enthusiastic about their subjects and the labs were interesting too. Not too hard to keep up and the assessments were fair.

The labs were actual quite fun and better than first year labs. This was a difficult unit though, the exam was ok as we were given a previous years exam which contained similar questions however the inclass post lab tests were sometimes difficult even though they were open book. The structure of the course however is very good (theoretically) as it allows lab-post lab-watch someones presentation-test in that order. As long as you give it your full attention and understand fundamental concepts you should be fine. Don't slack off and treat it as a core unit ;)

Extremely difficult to follow, jumped from standard knowledge to absolute gibberish extremely quickly. I found the lecturers accents and lack of enthusiasm really hard to keep up with.

Really struggled with this unit. The material wasn't that interesting and the lecturers monotonous voices didn't help. Don't recommend unless its a required unit.
