Hi, Abi here. I'm a final year Doctor of Medicine(MD) student at UWA from Singapore. I had completed...
Reviews
This unit is quite easy, fairly easy HD although as far as I'm aware our exam was moderated up, but I feel as though this is just to ensure enough people passed/got good marks, since the IMED course is a joke as it is. Liz was a good lecturer although presented lectures a bit monotonously, although if you're like me that wouldn't bother you. Unit has 29 lectures in total. Test 1 isn't hard, test 2 assesses a bit more difficult content. Occasionally small pieces of information were assessed, but most of it is general understanding, aside from having any sort of "process" steps memorised (eg. general transcription factors binding process). SDL was indeed easy. Exam wasn't too challenging, we had to draw a diagram for one question. Despite this unit being fairly easy, it ended up as my lowest mark of the semester. No/Minimal practice exams available. PATH2211 is a good recommendation if you enjoyed this unit/found it easy, and you're not disadvantaged if you didn't do the other prerequisite units for it. SCIE1106 is also fairly related to this unit, and easy, roughly half of the lectures covering content mentioned in this unit. Also if you're lucky enough you'll get to hear a lecture recording of Liz mis-speaking and swearing before restarting the sentence, which she forgot to cut out before uploading the lecture. That woke me up. If you're doing the IMSCP (IMED) major, this sem I'd recommend also taking ANHB1101 and one easy unit in case you find uni challenging.

This unit is difficult, if you don't put in the effort, and will slap you in the face for not treating it seriously. The content truly lays a foundation for most second year units and seamlessly bridges human biology and chemistry in an intriguing and delightful manner. The tasks and assessments were quite difficult, so try your hardest. The exam was quite hard, so take good notes and revise well. The wonderful UCs hold the unit together superbly.

Cannot speak more highly of Liz and Amber! Such a great challenging unit

I really enjoyed the content in this unit! All of the staff were splendid in presenting the content in a clear and concise manner. I really missed going to the face to face lectures and labs due to the pandemic! Amber was excellent in transitioning the labs online during COVID, and the lab contents were always clearly connected to the lecture contents. The SDL and Virtual Lab Book were so enjoyable to complete! The tests and exam were mostly fair. I only wished we were given a full length practice exam to complete rather than a truncated version, since I felt the jump from the multiple choice only tests to the short answer questions in the final exam was quite significant. Overall, not difficult to get an HD.

Excellent unit. Liz is an excellent lecturer, which were well explained. The labs were fun, and the exam was very reasonable. The SDL is the easiest marks to gain. This unit provides excellent foundations to IMED1003, so anybody doing this should definitely not forget anything taught here.

Absolutely loved this unit. The lecturers, Liz & Daniela, are incredibly kind and solid lecturers. Most concepts in this unit are very basic, with the first 4 weeks being primarily Year 12 chemistry, but some concepts can be harder to grasp in latter stages of the course. The tests are incredibly fair and very easy to score highly in if you've covered the material that has been given. The SDL is basically free marks, and 4% is given to you just for coming to the lab classes. I just wouldn't recommend the textbook, as it goes into much more depth than covered in lectures, which can be confusing and make you feel as though you should know more - but they will ONLY put questions in based on the lectures themselves!

Liz is amazing, unit is not very content heavy but some concepts are moderately difficult. Unit is examined very well so as long as you know your stuff, assessments will feel like a breeze.

Interesting unit and great lecturers, Liz and Daniella were amazing in explaining the content. There were two topic tests worth 10% each, one test based on labs and pracs worth 15%. There were two assignments which were really straightforward. You also get 4% for just attending the lab class. All the assessments and exams were completely based on your understanding of what was taught in the lectures, so you will be fine if you pay attention to the lectures and remember the content.

Nothing to fear here. Liz Quail and Daniella Ulgiati are solid lecturers and teach the content well, providing a good grounding in biochemistry/molecular biology and a little genetics. Learning outcomes and what we did and didn't need to know for assessments were made extremely clear, which was a godsend. The exam was straightforward and the tests were mostly fine as well. My only issue was that the Lehninger textbook went into way too much depth and just wasn't necessary given the quality and clarity of the lectures. A great unit.
