My first attempt for this unit was in semester 2 of 2020. I love algebra but despise all other math. I failed my first attempt of the unit, a mixture of not understanding the lecture content and not studying enough for the exam. I had some friends in the classes and they found it equally as challenging, they however just passed with a few % above 50. We found that Nazim our lecturer was really knowledgable, but tended to move quite fast and didn't know how to teach people who had no idea what they were doing. As it was a compulsory unit for my degree I had to retake this unit. I ended up focusing on my core units and then came back to this one in Semester 1 of 2022. The unit had a new professor called Michael and I found that he made learning Maths Methods so much easier. Overall I found the lectures easier to understand, the homework was based on questions which helped solidify the equations you use for each question and we had weekly tests to test our understanding on what we learnt in the week. I also joined the Maths discord which helped me. I ended up doing really well and ended the unit with a Distinction :)

Amazing unit. Requires some work but HD is attainable

This unit had great lecturers; with the first half of the unit being taught by Thomas Stemler; the head of the maths research department at UWA. It also offered 6 different Tutorial times so there was plenty of opportunities to get help.

This unit requires a lot of hard work. New topic is covered each week so you have to keep up to date. The lectures will give you info about the topics but to know how to do the questions, I recommend going to the tutorials even though they are not compulsory. The mid sem exam was very similar to the mock exam so know how to do each question. The final exam was on the topics you learn after the mid sem exam and it was an open book so just understand each concept and do every single question given in the mock exam. HD is possible if you do all the weekly questions and actually understand them.

Strange unit. It tries to teach 2 years worth of high school content in 1 semester so every week is a new major topic. This usually would mean you have to constantly keep up to date with coursework but the 4 tests only covered the first couple weeks. The mid sem then only covered the following week. The final test also had half of the answers exposed so it was quite easy to achieve 100% in that. Since the second half of the semester is completely unassessed until the exam it's quite easy to just leave altogether. I definitely don't recommend waiting until 2 days before the exam to learn all the content but thankfully it was open book and almost identical to the practice exam. The practice questions are much harder than the assessments so you might be able to get away with only doing practice tests and exams as preparation. Workshops aren't compulsory and I managed to get away with a good mark (which is why i give it 2 stars!) with minimal effort as it was just a poorly organised unit. Since questions aren't as thorough as high school methods it actually was a easier to actually follow and find enjoyable as a subject. Nazim clearly knows a lot about the subject but half the time it's very hard to follow what he's actually saying. Often he mumbles a bit and ends up with a solution in one step and as someone who only did apps it was incredibly hard to understand what was going on. He is very nice though and was very helpful when I was having technical issues with submitting my exam.

Very hard unit requiring lots of time dedicated to study to achieve average marks. Very boring lecturers. Massive step up from previous maths unit. Normally enjoy maths but not this time.
