BANGER UNIT SO FUN
Anonymous, Semester 2, 2023
SLAYS! Ashley is one of the best lecturers UWA has, the unit is very casual and enjoyable. If you participate, watch the lectures and pay attention the assignments are very easy. Super interesting content about the globalisation of music, the evolution of music and pop music in general. Ashely brings both old and current music to the table, and is very enthusiastic about it so will discuss almost anything with you. 10/10

Ashley is one of if not the best lecturer I've had in my entire time at uni. This unit is not all that daunting if you have even the most basic understanding of music and you certainly do not need to be classically trained. As long as you pay attention in lectures, you'll be alright for this class. I flunked the first quiz and approached Ashley for feedback and ended up getting a distinction at the end of the semester. I didn't attend in-person lectures as I had a clashing class but they were pretty alright to sit through when I watched them back. The best piece of advice I can give is to go into this unit with an open mind and with a curiosity to learn more about music history and world cultures.

Great elective unit! Interesting take on music without needing an extensive music knowledge. What other class does exam entail listening to playlists?

The unit structure and assessment outline must have changed from previous years because this unit was definitely not as easy and enjoyable as past reviews made it seem. Some of the content felt way above the knowledge requirement of first year students or students with no musical knowledge or background. The lectures were PAINFULLY long (literally averaging at around 2 hours) and some the assessments felt VERY unreasonable. I will say though that professor Ashley is great, his enthusiasm and love for the subject and the fact that he is very approachable made the unit bearable. It is possible to get a HD if you can give it your best shot at every assessment and if you can surround yourself with others who are also willing to try.

Very cool unit! You get a chance to watch & listen to many live performances :) Contents are easy to follow, final exam is very easy if you attend/watch the lectures. The final tutorial is for exam preparation, so make sure you attend that one! Many thanks to the unit coordinator - Ashley!

This was a highly enjoyable and easy unit. The lectures were very engaging, and displayed a wide variety of musical cultures. The lecturer was very attentive, and a fun, great teacher. The labs are easy to follow, mostly requiring you to view music videos - very laidback. The all-MCQ exam was very easy and required basic preparation. Easy marks for this fun unit.
