Reviews

IMPORTANT: This unit has been restructured and the teaching staff have changed since the five-star reviews were written. It hasn't been an improvement to say the least. The unit is now obsessed with disability and dedicates more than half of its teaching weeks exclusively to disability-related issues. There is a heavy slant towards a particular perspective: I don't say this because I think the unit is "biased" or anything like that, but because it just doesn't cover everything when it comes to bioethics. It gets repetitive and frankly boring. I found the teaching staff unhelpful and marking structures were deliberately not provided. There are far better philosophy units to take, and unless you have a strong interest in disability I strongly recommend you avoid this unit if possible.

One of my favourite units so far! Everything you need is provided, all you need to do is watch the lectures, do the readings and participate in the tutorials to get a good mark. The essay was marked fairly and the exam was straightforward. Highly recommend to anyone, especially philosophy majors.

My favourite unit so far! If you’re interested in looking into euthanasia, abortion, animal welfare etc. in extensive detail, then this is the unit to take. Texts & lectures provided a good framework for the essays & exam & you are given a choice as to which topics in particular you write on. Workshop attendance was not compulsory, which was a shame for those who did attend, however it filtered out those who were not overly interested in discussion. This unit can be done without prior knowledge of philosophy, however I think any first year philosophy unit will provide a good foundation for this unit.

An exciting and challenging unit, probing the difficult and emotive issues affect every conscious being on the Earth. Bioethics will challenge you to find consistency in how we think about other lives, and consider the consequences, environmentally, legally and personally of our ideation about life, and its importance.
