Good unit. Tutor was clear and lectures were informative.

I found this unit to be relatively easy. The lectures only really hinted at particular themes and it was necessary to read beyond the learning materials to develop a wider understanding of the techniques used in the primary texts. I found my particular tutor was an incredibly hard marker and his explanation as to why I was always a few marks short of a HD a little unnerving as his only answer was that my essays did not match the standards of the "imaginary 100% paper" which they were being marked against. umm.. what?... I found I received better marks when I did a deconstructive close reading and spoke more about the author's focus on form in the text, as opposed to the content. Overall a great subject but definitely requires more time and effort than other English major subjects.

This unit has engaging readings and useful content, but is let down by the terribly vague marking guidelines for the first few assignments- everyone gets awful marks, and the Tutors only get angry rather than helpful.
