Stay on top of this unit - it is quite prolonged and most can be irrelevant, especially for students studying policing practices. The final assignment is worth 45%, don't leave it til the last minute and use your tutors as best you can!

Studied this unit over the summer semester 2016-2017. If the unit wasn't a core unit, I would have withdrawn. My tutor consistently told students they would fail if they hadn't read the entire textbook. Each week the class decreased by half. If tutors/lecturers deem the unit as very content heavy, it should not be available to study over summer semester. Bluntly, the unit was run like a scare campaign and was unnecessarily complicated- coupled with very tough marking.

Very tough unit. Entire unit as completely dysfunctional with how it was run (missing titles, wrong information in learning guide and was corrected later etc.). Lectures were informative but the tutors were extremely harsh markers and will fail you at the blink of an eye. It's both good and bad, since you have to really apply yourself to get good marks but it can be disappointing sometimes. Especially with the lack of constructive feedback that can be given. Marking criteria was divided into "Satisfactory work", "Good work" etc. Not very helpful when you are trying to do an assignment. Content is dry, but manageable provided you keep up with the work...not something you can cruise through and then do well in assessments. Over the semester I grew to like the content a bit, but marking standards made it difficult to remain motivated. A core unit for many courses, but if I had the choice I would do something else.

Reviewing this subject is hard- one the one hand, I really enjoyed the unit and the content (hence why I'm still keen to tutor it!). On the other hand, I appreciate that there are a lot of new terms introduced and people had different experiences of the teaching. Ultimately, if you try and scrape through this unit it's going to be a tough slog! However if you really want to get the most out of it (and there's valuable skills on offer if you do) then I think it's fantastic unit for employability and general understanding of where we develop our profession's knowledge base. If you need help with it, be proactive in getting support and you'll enjoy the semester a lot more!
