FedCon Table Overview of Powers - DISTINCTION
Subject notes for UNSW LAWS2150
Description
FedCon is incredibly complex, I know! This table will give you a high level overview and understanding of the different powers under section 51 of the Australian constitution for the Parliament with the rules, approach and applicable cases for each power. I created this table when studying for FedCon in 2012 to understand how each power and how they fit together and as a quick reference point to help me identify the issues in a problem question. I ended up getting an 83 in this exam (with a final mark of 77 because I bombed the mid sem). The powers covered include: - External affairs - Corporations - Trade and commerce - Races - Defence - Taxation - Grants - Judicial power and detention - Trial by jury - Implied freedom of communication - Melbourne corporation principle Note: This table may need to be updated with new cases since I studied it in 2012 but hopefully it will give you an overview of how to approach and understand the cases.
