The first edition functions just as well as the second. Both editions contain the same musical excerpts, but some are listed in a different order, and the second edition has more excerpts. For example, the first edition lists the excerpt "Terpsichore, IV, Bransle double No. 1, mm. 1-4 (1612)" by P. F. Caroubel as excerpt 1. The second edition lists it as excerpt 54. It is possible to complete Aural Perception 1-4 with this first edition as with the second. You won't need all of the textbook's content for the homework that would be set for you. Excerpt numbering for most cases will be a small difference.
