Quite enjoyable and the choice of books were pretty interesting.

I loved this subject so much. My tutor, Tori, was so passionate and engaging. I found the initial assessments quite stressful, but once I got the hang of it, I fell in love with the texts and the subject. I really enjoyed writing my final portfolio and achieved an H1 because I enjoyed it so much. Don't stress about finishing every text, as you won't need to write on them all. However, reading them does mean you can get more involved in the subject and have meaningful discussions in your tutorials.

An enjoyable subject. The texts are well chosen and I did really enjoy tutorials but unfortunately thought the lectures were not very engaging overall. I agree to some extent that it does feel quite rushed, but that is only because of the range of literature the subject has to cover over 12 weeks. I found its better not to stress too much about finishing the text in its entirely, but rather understanding the key themes and context of it. Tutor Sarah was amazing and I received good feedback on my work.

This is a great introduction to university level literature. I didn't complete the other 1st year english subject, but I still found the workload very manageable and enjoyable. Texts were great for the most part, and I enjoyed the class discussions. Even though there was a lot of reading (9 primary texts + other secondary readings) during the semester, you only had to read 4 books in order to complete the assessments. The only negative was that the lectures (depending on who was the lecturer for the week) would give too much historical and author context, and not enough focus closely on the text for the week. Generally, a really great 1st year subject - would recommend.

I loved this subject, and found the choice of texts and secondary materials to be very engaging (Woolf, Joyce, Plath, Beckett, Salinger etc). For me, it did not feel rushed, as I typically read a book a week in my spare time anyway, but this subject may not be for you if you do not like reading so fast. Because you are required to read a text a week, you also have to establish your analysis and thoughts of the text fairly quickly, and there will only be 1 tutorial on each individual text. Essay questions are fairly flexible and you are given themes/topics to base your thesis around. Tutorials are a lot of fun but make sure you read the text or they won't be worthwhile. The lectures were my favorite part of the subject however (definitely attend some in person) - the lecture material was at a very high level and I wasn't disappointed. I enjoyed this subject much more than the other 1st year english subject ENGL10002.

In contrast to VCE literature classes, this subject felt cramped and rushed, and I didn't feel as if I ever grasped a true understanding of any of the texts I studied for the duration of this course. Most lectures were insightful and interesting, but held little value when it came to writing the assessments. The tutorials were also interesting, but there was only one a week, and they were only an hour long, so there was very little time to spend on each text, and the conversation mostly went off on a tangent or focused on a niche that was not useful to the assessment. The way my essays were marked was very helpful and improved my writing skills in the long run. Our tutor gave us 3-minute voice messages of feedback which offered much more than the usual side-notes and criticism. I think if you have the mind of an academic rather than the mind of a writer, or you're accustomed to University style literature classes already, you'd enjoy this subject a lot more than I did.
