The marking is terribly wishy-washy and subjective, but at least the content was relatively applicable to many real-life situations.

Overall, a good subject if you are interested in developmental psychology concepts. Straight forward assignments.

I enjoyed this subject! The lecturers, in general, were great — especially Brooker! She had such a nurturing and warm presence about her :) really lovely. There were three sections to this subject: biological development, cognitive development and social/emotional development. Some of the content felt a bit circular — the same concepts were repeated a few times, namely the developmental theories of Piaget, Vygotsky etc. (though these are pretty seminal ideas so ig it makes sense). I also felt like it was a bit dry (“wishy washy” as someone else said) at times, particularly some of the cognitive and social/emotional development lectures, I didn’t feel as though I was learning much, however I think it also comes down to personal preference (I have a predilection for neuro). It's useful to mention that the first week and last week have no content, so you effectively have 10 weeks of content rather than 12. There is one section on linguistics which is quite a detour from the general ~vibe~ of the subject and is a little content-heavy but I really enjoyed it, however I know a few people who found it to be quite dry. There is also one section that is basically year 10/11 biology — mitosis, meiosis, chromosomal abnormalities and all that jazz. In the lab report, there were two hypotheses and you were allowed to pick your second one, comparing any two variables. It was pretty decent, but once again, the topic was a bit more open to personal interpretation than bio psych. As with all psych subjects, it is marked harshly so keep this in mind (but they handhold you when writing it so it is okay). The (fully MCQ) exam was reasonable. We were allowed one double-sided A4 “support” sheet which could come in handy for specific timelines and theories to remember. Overall, I’d say it gives a pretty decent general overview of the developmental approach to various streams of psychology.

The coordinator was good. Assignment was well instructed and it was overall interesting and fair. I didn't like that the content was a bit "wishy washy" at time though, and that we spent so much lecture time reviewing theories without going much into equivalent amounts of research findings for some parts of the course.

Wonderful subject with great content; lecturers were equally good at delivering their content, which became increasingly interconnected as the semester went on. The assessments were all comprehensible and fairly marked: 3 quizzes covering each main ‘branch’ of developmental psychology that can be retaken until you get a desired score, a lab report which had clear instructions and rubric, and an exam which had understandable guidelines and a variety of possible exam questions posted prior to the exam. Practical classes were also conducted only 5 times a semester (every other week) which frees up your timetable. My only gripe was that the lab report was introduced very early on in the semester and was the main focus of majority of practical classes; they are definitely useful (especially if you participate in the pracs since you can exit the class with entirely completed sections of the lab report) but daunting for some students who haven’t had experiences with writing lab reports or those who prefer to work on the assessment at their own pace.

LOVED the lectures/content in this subject. The quizzes are a free 15% since you can redo them until you get a 100%. However, the lab report was challenging and quite harshly marked (average was an H3), but if you stick to APA guidelines/try to understand the topic, you can still do well. 8 Exam Qs are given in advance and three are in the exam, so you can prepare your essays well in advance. However, I felt like there wasn't that much support given in writing these essays, so if essay writing isn't your strong suit, steer clear of this subject. Overall, very good subject and shoutout to the co-ordinator (Abi) who was especially interested in students/their wellbeing :D

I really like the content and the lecturers in this subject, I found it really interesting and engaging, and my tutor was amazing! But the lab report was quite hard to do well in, they expect you to we very very familiar with APA style formatting (in very fine detail) and the marking is quite stringent. However, all in all it wasn't a bad subject, I just wouldn't do it if you're looking for an easy H1 or if you haven't done a psychology subject before. The exam was an essay exam, but they gave you a list of questions in advance to prepare, from which a few would be chosen for the exam, so it was not too bad in terms of exam preparation.

Loved this subject! Lab report was fairly straight forward. Tutorials were a bit useless, but lectures were great, covered a good range of developmental topics and really cemented my interest in dev psych. Exam is definitely trickier than all the other psych subjects

Loved this subject! The 2021 lab report was complex, and definitely challenged me. The exam, consisting of three short essays was heavy in terms of content, but quite rewarding and enjoyable if you enjoy writing. It is critical that you use the textbook for the final exam component.
