This is unit is really difficult, and speeds through content ridiculously fast. Most of the people doing it don’t have much background in maths, and are forced to take it as maths prerequisite for science or commerce degrees. However, this unit is not taught with an understanding of that and most people in my groupchat reported feeling lost and confused. The explanations for this unit are very poor, and the accompanying notes are needlessly complicated and confusing. It got to the point where I watched Khan Academy videos instead of the official videos, because the explanations were just so much clearer. David, the lecturer, is extremely nice and tries to be helpful, but this is overall a terrible unit. It has completely ruined both my WAM and my mental health.

Had to write a review because just had to say, coming from somebody who scored a high band six in HSC General Maths II (which is a pre req, anybody who did any levels beyond that is NOT allowed entry into this subject), me and most people I know found this course difficult. It's not 'easy' as a lot of the reviews here have posted. There is a huge learning curve - pre calculus is somewhat interesting and familiar because it will incorporate concepts you already know from high school, but starting around mid sem break and beyond that the content gets hard. And i mean hard. The assignments are structured in a way to maximise your marks because they know that the content is difficult and is relying on you absoloutely aceing the easier stuff so you can afford to perform poorly in the later, harder content. My advice: do NOT neglect the online quizzes. They are worth 20% and you should be getting no less than 20%, considering they are opened for a huge amount of time and you get 3 attempts every 8 hours. Get the 20%, trust me, you'll be far better off later. And don't leave them till last minute because you definitely won't get full marks on your first 3 shots, you'll need a couple of days to get them. Also: refer to the MOOC content for help with the assignments, some questions are sourced directly from there, but this is the steep learning curve I was talking about. Very difficult, especially in assignment 2, to link the questions to concepts you have covered. Good luck!! Pros: David is extremely nice, very genuine and caring guy and made the subject worth it. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it!

As a maths HATER that barely passed 2 unit Maths in the HSC this was a pretty good uni, 100% easier than the MATH1011 unit. I think the structure and time alocation for different maths 'topics' was a little off though - they seemed to spend more time on stuff i found easy to understand and then kinda rush over things that i stuggled with even the fist time learning it for HSC. If you haven't got maths experience (probably up to algebra level) it may be hard to keep up but the online homework tasks/resources are great practice.

This is such a GOOD UNIT FOR PEOPLE WHO STRUGGLE WITH MATHS. It's the easiest maths unit in the university but really challenging for people with no maths background. You really have to put in EFFORT if you want the marks. I tried extremely hard in this subject and only managed a credit, proving that if you don't have a maths background it's extremely challenging. The subject will grow on you however by the time you get to integration.

Can't really ask for a better introduction to calculus. Theoretical working out made it difficult to understand the point of it at the time but overall worth it

Quite n easy maths course

This was such a good course for someone who has not done Year 11 or 12. All of the staff were extremely helpful, and I found it very useful that the lecturers would explain things from the very most fundamental perspective, which has helped immensely as its created a solid foundation on which I have been able to easily and neatly build more knowledge on. The best thing about Math1111 was the kind staff, and the assignments. The worst thing about Math1111 was the fuzzy overhead projector in the Eastern Ave auditorium which would make my eyes tired during the 2 hr lecture.

Overall a well-taught and fair course, although there is a hell of a lot of content to learn as it covers from about Year 10 maths up to uni level. It's not as much of a breeze as people would have you believe.

Difficult content but achievable if you put in the work! The first half of the course is pre-calculus and that is very manageable. When you begin calculus it will take more effort. Definitely a helpful course and the mathlearningcenter is great! Tip: Do the weekly homework weekly, there is too much to leave it all to the end of sem!
