This was a really great unit, the current unit coordinator is Cyril Gruter and hes a really good lecturer. He does not bore you with countless explanations and uses examples when necessary - it makes his lectures very easy to follow. Some students complain about the required readings but I didn't find them to be bad, I actually enjoyed reading the required readings as they were directly related to what was being taught and helped me out in the final exam by giving me examples I could use. Overall a very fun unit that was taught well.

You know what this unit isn't that bad. As i'm writing this review in 2023, the unit coordinator is now Cyril Gruter instead of Debra Judge, and let me say that Cyril is an absolute g, he is very nice and is more then happy to answer any questions. You can get a guaranteed 15 percent by coming to tutorials, participating and putting effort into the worksheets ( even if you get lets say examples wrong, you can still get full marks if you show reasoning, effort or research). The midterm exam was also really good ( I got 83 percent ), so my tips are the following: pay attention to the lectures and the key concepts that Cyrils wants you to know( he will make it clear what's important like interpreting graphs) , doing the worksheets and the practice questions cyril gives you. The ethnography ( worth 25 percent ), is also really easy to score marks in. Its about comparing two ethnographies and their sources of variation. I scored 80 something for this so my tip is clearly state the differences, then back them with theory and make sure you reference each points you make( e.g polygamy is more in horticultural societies due to environment). Cyril also gives a whole PowerPoint guide on how to write the essay and best of all there is a peer review to check your work before you submit. However the exam was a bit tricky( only thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars) and some questions for me at least weren't even in the lectures . I also found some questions worded weirdly. Silvanas lectures in the second half of the semester was passionate and interesting, but I didn't know which information would be important and would be in the final exam. Also another huge complaint was the " mandatory readings" which isnt mandatory tbh ( tutor didnt care ) and rightly so as it extended knowledge that doesnt really apply to the worksheets or assignments at least in my opnion. Overall i definitely recommend this unit to my anhb mates as a core unit,as with hard work you can get a d or hd ( also less memorising than anhb2212 and less harsh then 2216). You can do this as broadening but you will find this a lot more challenging if you sorely want to do this as an easy level 2 elective ( I recommend arcy2006 for that)

Please dont take this unit, my unit coordinator, Debra Judge couldnt care less about whether students pass or fail, though she understands that most students taking this class care about their GPA since were going to medschool. For reference, I had a 6.4 GPA before this unit, and always took care of my marks to apply to medschool. You need to read two books for this class ontop of the weekly readings, but regardless of how much time you invest studying, you'll still eat shit. The class average for the midterm was 46% and most people didn't have enough time to answer all the questions. All the questions in this unit are short or long answer questions, no MCQ. Though you may understand the content fully, if you dont write the exact answers from the marker's answer key word for word, you wont recieve the marks. Though you may answer all the questions from the questions sheet with essays for each question, you'll still only be given 1 or 2 outta 3. The teachers dont care if you answered correctly, theyd rather see your thought process or signs of you crossing out and rewriting answers. Though I personally write essays for master and undergraduate essays in philosphy and humanities, I struggled to write the essay. By her own admission the Unit Coordinator told us that she barely give any proper instructions on doing the essay so she could see our thinking. On lms the class average was around 50%, so a even earning a pass credit in this class is difficult, a D or HD in this class is extreme wishful thinking.

This unit is difficult and harsh. The mid sem exam (20%) is extremely difficult for the amount of time you get (45 mins for 65 marks) and is extended answer. The tutorials (15%) were not helpful and there were multiple times where my peers and I were told we had to “Google it” when we asked a question. The tutor wasn’t able to explain her answers and would literally repeat the same answer multiple times. The analytical paper (25%) was challenging as it requires you to purchase 2 books that cost around $100 each. The final exam’s (40%) questions were more challenging than the mid sem and did not reflect the unit content well and from my peers alone it seems that most people got 45-55 range in the exam despite 65-75 pre exam averages

ANHB2215 Tutorial 15% Question Sets and Participation Easy to score and can't really go wrong with getting 12-13% from it. Research Paper 25% Coin flip depending on the topic you chose. Good thing is that there is a peer review of the paper, which will help you vet the quality of your paper. Bad thing is that it isn't easy to write the paper since it involves comparing and contrasting the sources of variation between 2 different ethnographies. Exams (mid term) 20% (finals) 40% Midterm was honestly a time-killer. 45 minutes for 65 marks. It's a huge struggle to complete the paper especially since it's entirely long answer. The finals was thankfully much better, 2h for 100 marks. Though it's less time-constraining, it's pretty challenging and I managed to do better for mid-terms than the finals by a small margin, even though I thought I performed better for the finals. Overall, it's a unit that is based on understanding and analysis, rather than rote-memory that is common for most ANHB units. Wouldn't recommend for a broadening unit and for those that hate long answers/essay style of question. It's an easy unit for credit, huge challenge for distinction even if you are on top on things, almost impossible for HD especially since the cohort is small (60+). On a sidenote, do get the 73 pages notes above, it helped me a lot for the research paper and revision for exams, even though it's a small investment to pay.

this unit was really interesting even though i have no interest in anthropology. debra is so passionate about her topics and makes everything understandable but you need a lot of logic and great thinking to understand everything. there is a lot to read every week and without watching the lectures and doing the readings you can't really get much done at the tutorials. the tutorials were actually so helpful but if you're lazy or don't like writing essays and extended answers don't take this unit.

Debra is a great lecturer -very enthusiastic and approachable. They really encourage collaboration. Although, the unit did require quite a bit of weekly work to keep up -but this (for me) meant that by the time the exam came I had already done quite a bit of work and lessened the study load.

The unit itself is very interesting if you are looking for something a bit further away from anatomy and human biology taught in first year. Debra Judge is a great lecturer, yet majority of her students find her teaching a bit left of centre and harder to follow. The unit requires a substantial amount of work, with the assessments being particularly challenging. Up to 50 pages of reading is assigned each week and although you could get through the unit and tutorials without them, I found that they really consolidated my understanding of the content taught. o
