LMAO this unit is the worst. Don't do it unless you're forced to. Pretty much everyone in the class this semester failed one of the main assessments it was so bad they emailed everyone about it asking what we wanted to do. The teaching in this unit is so poor, and the concepts are complex and there's simply too much work that's being asked. Workshops alone take around 6 hours to complete and because the complexity is so high you feel like you never really grasped it rather than just following instructions. The first assignment is thrown on you after the first two weeks and asks you to do so much work, more than what you could reasonably expect from just being introduced to a topic. Even the tutors in GIS lab say they never could even complete the workshops when they did the unit either. Unless you have lots of free time, aren't doing a full time courseload, or have very little work for your other units, don't take this class, especially if you have other units that are also content heavy because you absolutely will fall behind and feel like crap. The UC doesn't seem to care about anything and just drones on, seems like he lost the care to help student succeed and only cares about showing up for a paycheck.

I'd like to start by saying it was the hardest unit of my degree (psyc + crim majors), but weirdly it was worth it. Take the advice of the person below. finish each lab in the week its assigned and make friends with the alex the instructor because you'll be asking a heap of questions. it was super stressful at first and each lab takes around 6hrs to complete. in the end you learn a whole new mapping system and this skill is sought after in many industries. I also finished on a HD, so if you stick with it and do the work you can pass without problems.

This was overall a great unit. As an envt student I learnt sooo much! There is no exam, and assignments are worth large percentages. Some words of advice: 1. Attend every lab session and finish your maps before you start the next!! The maps are in the first assignment so you don't want to end up doing these last minute. 2. The first assignment is a steep learning curve so attend every help session you can, ask questions and work with your peers! You will get through it! 3. Start every assignment as soon as you get it! You only have 2 weeks and these are big assignments. If you don't you may not finish - so many people got late penalties in my class!! Overall great unit though and you learn soo much! If you're a good student you will do well!

Taught me quite a bit about QGIS in an understanable way, but the first assignment was way too stressful and complicated for how much we had been taught. Core unit, would not choose it otherwise
