Really interesting, readings not very challenging and as long as you're willing to engage in workshops it's very rewarding.

After a really bad experience with another first year history unit I took Enviro with really limited faith in how it would be run. Jo is a fantastic lecturer and the best I've come across in the Arts department. The unit is structured so there are workshops (readings are important for this but in a group of 5 you can typically work out your response to gether before someone presents it) and then a short (750ish) and longer (1500/2000) essays towards the end. Only problem I had with the unit were the workshops that sometimes used most of the second hour to watch an excerpt of a documentary. Otherwise a great, really broad ranging history unit applicable to a variety of degrees/interests.

Decent subject with a lot of valuable topics about the interactions between people and the environment over the ages. Fun weekly topics. Those who are willing to provide their own insight or like to voice their opinions on subjects have an advantage over those who don't. While the essays are relatively easy to complete, do not expect high marks due to the strict marking.

This was an engaging unit that took us chronologically through the various interactions between humans and the environment. The 50% essay instead of an exam was a plus, and our stand-in teacher was very good! Particularly relevant for anyone studying environmental science or conservation biology etc.
