This unit is great if you are super passionate about music and the role of women in music history. It was quite difficult to get all the info as, instead of the usual lectures, there were PowerPoints with voice recordings. This meant that there was no transcript of what the teacher was saying so you had to listen super carefully. The seminars were quite boring and it was always the same people who spoke each week. They say that you are marked for attendance if you speak and engage during seminars but they don't follow through with that - most people just went in and listened to others. This unit is okay but was quite heavy at times.

This unit was by far the worst I’ve taken. I think the main issue with the unit are the “modules”… the way it’s formatted is quite messy and I personally think a normal lecture video is way better than going through slides and finding the audio clips scattered around. And it was just a pain in the ass to go back to the modules to revise content. I also found the seminars very uninteresting and distasteful. In the beginning they told us that participation is marked by just being there… and although I thought it was a good thing at first… it made me realise how lazy they are in wanting the best outcome for the student… bcs the kids who spoke… spoke… and the ones that would come into the seminars would leave without learning anything. It was like we were left in the shadows. I think those who were passionate and had some background knowledge of music and feminism enjoyed the unit because as someone who was interested and wanted to learn… it felt like I came into the class and left even more confused. And the damn “test”… the 2 essays they wanted us to write “with reference” whilst going back and forth into YouTube videos and research articles in less than 2 hours… IN CHICAGO REFERENCE… in turnitin (literally the worst to write anything on)… it felt like we were set up to fail… overall I hated this unit and would not recommend it… everyone in that seminar probably thinks the same bcs as each week went by the class began to shrink… you’re welcome I saved y’all from wtv this is.

This is a really important subject. Absolutely loved it. Cecilia Sun is a great lecturer and tutor. The organisation of the unit wasn't the best but I do attribute that to COVID, and also Cecilia was very open to people's recommendations for how to improve it. Highly recommend to anyone - you don't need music theory knowledge.
